SIZHU LI

Biography

I was born in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province of China in 1990. Throughout my life so far, I have been fascinated by depicting and building magic worlds based on my understandings of the real society and humility. This broad interest was cultivated during my childhood and was bloomingly developed during my high-school period at the Fine Arts School Affiliated to Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and my college time at the China Central Academy of Art. My BFA was in illustration, after which I started to think about using the interactive three-dimensional medium to express my thoughts. Following this dream, I came to the US for a further study in this direction. In 2018, I got my MFA in Mount Royal School of Art, a multi-disciplinary program in the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA)

In my recent works, I try to build magical narrative worlds with integrated and surreal atmospheres, composed of aluminum sheets, found objects, light, air, digital videos as well as programming-based microcontrollers. All these efforts are aimed to immerse the audience in these dream-like worlds, to see, to hear, to feel, and to think. Envisioning everyday materials with a fresh perspective sparks my imagination to themes of humility, love, science and technique, environment, and home.

I have had multiple group shows in Beijing and Baltimore, and one solo show in Baltimore. Upon my graduation in 2018, I won the largest graduate fellowship which awards one graduate for the most academic excellence among all MICA students. One upcoming show of mine will be in the Baltimore Billboard gallery in 2018 Winter.

Currently, I live and work in New York.

Artist Statement

I build magical worlds with integrated and surreal atmospheres, comprehensively composed of real materials, objects, light, colors, air, and videos. I immerse my audience in these unconsidered mind-spaces: seeing, hearing, feeling, and thinking. Envisioning everyday materials with a fresh perspective sparks my imagination to themes of humility, love, science and technique, environment, and home. My installations release my visions into the world, offering an image of beauty both ethereal and fragmentary. Each successive project stretches my capacities, both artistic and technical, pushing me into the new creative territory. My works mystify, conjuring a bewildered yet curious reaction. They offer an open space designed not to provide specific answers but to evoke another-worldly experience unique to each viewer.  I am not afraid to explore, even if my explorations end in a temporary failure. In the end, failure is the fertile ground for the next artwork. No artistic experiment is ever useless.
